Lecture: Urban Renewal in Conflict - Rykestraße and Prenzlauer Berg in the Late GDR
Go to eventAbout
City historian Kathrin Meißner explores the conflicts and compromises surrounding urban development in the Prenzlauer Berg district during the 1980s. Despite widespread decay, plans for renewal, demolition, and modernization were constant topics of debate in the late GDR. This lecture sheds light on why changing the cityscape proved so difficult due to a lack of construction capacity and disagreements over design strategies. It is an insightful look into the social and architectural history of a legendary Berlin neighborhood.
